The Future of Arts Research - This training is now full and no longer taking registrations
Wednesday 4 October 2017 & Wednesday 21 February 2018
Innovative Skills Training for Practice Research in the Arts. This programme of innovative skills training is geared toward those involved in practice research, generally, and arts research, specifically. The nature of the training is inherently interdisciplinary, devised and developed by researchers across Fine Art, Performance and Poetry. 


Transmissions: Mapping Communicability through Artistic and Creative Research - This training is now closed for registrations
From Friday 6 October | Various venues
Running over the course of three years, this series of events will offer specific training in artistic and creative research in the areas of Fine Art, Art-Writing, Performance and Poetry.
The event series will involve an opening Roundtable discussion between CHASE researchers; a series of Public Lectures + Masterclasses delivered by national and international artists, performers and poets; and a concluding Research Banquet.


Women of Colour Index (WOCI) Reading Group
From 1 November | Women’s Art Library, Goldsmiths, University of London
The aim of the training sessions is to create a forum for discussing this openly and through critical frameworks, which is key to our research strategy. We strongly encourage individuals from all backgrounds, genders, religions, sexualities and races to engage with our research and hope that we have a strongly interdisciplinary and intergenerational mix of researchers to add complexity to our conversations. We hope the connections formed through our conversations with CHASE researchers beyond Goldsmiths will develop long-term collaborations and contributions to the field.


Scholarly Editing Unpacked
17 November 2017, 10.30-18.30, followed by drinks reception | Keynes Room, Birkbeck, University of London
This day-long workshop brings together leading scholars to explore why editing matters and to exchange and develop practical advice and experience. It will challenge preconceptions of the relative unimportance or invisibility of scholarly editorial skills, and will equip its delegates with nomenclature and a roadmap for navigating the field.
Whether you are embarking on an editorial project, harbouring thoughts of doing so in the future, or are simply keen to know more – and to know more accurately – about the literary objects you study this workshop will be of value and use.


On the Social in Architecture
24 November, 9 March & 21 June | ICA, London
These three CHASE training days, co-organised by the Institute of Contemporary Arts and the ASSC (Architecture, Space and Society Centre, Birkbeck) will collaboratively consider a question fundamental to PhD students in architecture and other disciplines, particularly in relation to public institutions, social housing, and resettlement: ‘What is the social in architecture?’ Each training day will be comprised of a participatory training/skills session and a more public presentation of exemplary work in this area. 


Researching interculturally: Conceptual and methodological issues
Friday 24 November | October Gallery, Central London
This workshop will focus on the core conceptual and methodological issues of researching interculturally and is designed to create a space for thinking through and about interculturality both critically and creatively. 


Latin for Early-Modernists  - This training is now closed for registrations
5-10 November 2017 & 10-15 June 2018
This two-part residential course will provide you with the tools required to read and understand the Latin texts relevant to your research at a deeper level and will allow you to explore the challenges of working with Classical, medieval and Renaissance Latin materials over the course of the academic year.


Object Literacy: Research through Epigraphy and Inscriptions in Chinese Art History
18 December & 2 further dates TBC | SOAS University of London and the Victoria & Albert Museum, British Museum and British Library
The aim of this training is to build the capacity of participants to employ inscriptions on objects of art and material culture as historical evidence, through a rich introduction to epigraphy—specifically, to the historical framework for the addition, positioning and textual content of inscriptions as well as appraisal of the significance of stylistic references and graphic modes employed.


Researching (with) Difficult Feelings - Call for presentations by PhD students at CHASE institutions
14-15 December 2017 | Birkbeck Centre for Contemporary Theatre

This two-day training workshop for PhD students focuses on the study of and dealing with difficult feelings in theatre and performance research. Difficult feelings can be considered as those that complicate or compromise the researcher’s approach to their material, including anger, sadness, guilt, shame, love, offence, frustration, boredom – the list goes on. Addressing conceptual, methodological and interpersonal issues, the training event will focus on three areas of concern: 1) feelings: how to research with and about them 2) language: finding the right words 3) ethics: identifying responsibilities.

The 15 December will focus on invited 15 minute presentations from PhD students at CHASE institutions whose projects have unearthed difficult feelings, in terms of research content and experience, with advisory input from academics. The emphasis of this panel is discussing feeling in the context of PhD research projects, towards developing strategies for project development, writing and analysis. For example, a student might want to explore how best to write engagingly, critically and ethically about work that is preoccupied with or provokes distress in some way. 


Funding for Student-led training

The CHASE Training and Development Group is happy to consider proposals for a range of activities from single day events to multiple day, multi-site programmes. Budget can be made available to cover costs for external speakers, catering, external venue hire (where appropriate).
